Good to know

  • The Brienz Rothorn Railway is a historic steam cog railroad. Therefore, the capacity for guests is limited and on nice summer days there may be either longer waiting times or even all trains may be sold out. To avoid these inconveniences, we recommend that you buy your ticket in advance, including a guaranteed seat. This gives you direct access to the platform and a guaranteed seat for the desired departure time: Webshop.

  • In the event of high passenger numbers or technical failure of a steam locomotive, diesel locomotives may be used for passenger services.

  • Our train compartments can accommodate eight people. We use the available capacity and do not offer private compartments.

  • Please note that the steam train generates noise and steam.

  • Important note for SBB Ticktes digital and analog: SBB tickets, whether in paper form or in the app, do not work at our turnstiles. If you have an SBB ticket, we recommend purchasing a seat guarantee in our webshop .

  • Surcharge for ticket purchase during the journey.

If there are 10 or more paying adults, you benefit from a reduction on the regular fare. Further information on groups can be found here.

We can transport people in hand wheelchairs on request. Unfortunately, we cannot carry electric wheelchairs or oversized wheelchairs on our trains. This also applies to motorized aids (similar to Swisstrac) as these are very heavy. However, these aids can be parked free of charge at the valley station in Brienz. The person in the wheelchair is lifted into the carriage by "man power" (65cm in height), as the incline on the platform makes it impossible for us to provide a ramp. It is therefore a good idea to have appropriate helpers accompanying the person, who can lift the person into the carriage and also provide support en route in an emergency situation (train breakdown/train change on the line). Once you arrive at Rothorn Kulm, you have to master the steep uphill path (tarred) to the restaurant (approx. 100m). The restaurant is barrier-free and there is an accessible toilet. Afterwards, it is unfortunately no longer possible to go on a "hike" in a wheelchair, as all the paths around Rothorn are red and white mountain hiking trails. However, wheelchair users can enjoy the view over Lake Brienz from the terrace.

If you would like to book a trip with a wheelchair, we need the desired travel date, the desired departure time from Brienz, the desired departure time from Rothorn Kulm, the number of accompanying persons and your complete address including telephone number (at least two days before arrival).

Reka-Checks are accepted 100% on all tickets (group fares excluded).
